چکیده
ABSTRACT Spectral hole burning reduces sodium laser guide star efficiency. Due to photon recoil, atoms that are initially resonant with the single-frequency get Doppler shifted out of resonance, which return flux. Frequency-chirped (also known as frequency-swept) continuous-wave lasers have potential mitigate effect spectral and even increase efficiency beyond theoretical limit a laser. We investigate flux frequency-chirped stars its dependence on environmental chirping parameters. On-sky measurements frequency-chirped, performed at Roque de los Muchachos Observatory La Palma. A fast photon-counting receiver system is employed resolve return-flux response during frequency sweeps gaining insights into population dynamics layer. At launched power 16.5 W, we find maximum gain in 22 per cent compared fixed-frequency amplitude order 150 MHz rate 0.8 µs−1. Time-resolved period confirm our understanding These first enhancement for excited by single-frequency-chirped For higher powers, effectiveness expected increase, could be highly beneficial telescopes equipped high-power adaptive optics systems.

Return flux budget of polychromatic laser guide stars.
The polychromatic laser guide star (PLGS) is one of the solutions proposed to extend the sky coverage by large telescopes to 100% by enabling a complete knowledge of all perturbation orders of the wavefront. The knowledge of the tip-tilt is deduced from the monitoring of the chromatic components of the PLGS, from 330 nm to the visible or near infrared. Here we study the original scheme to creat...
متن کاملModeling Laser Guide Star Aberrations
When using a laser guide star (LGS) adaptive optics system, quasi-static aberrations are observed between the measured wavefronts from the LGS wavefront sensor (WFS) and the natural guide star WFS. We model these LGS aberrations. c © 2007 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (010.1080) Adaptive optics;(010.7350) Wave-front sensing.

There are still a lot of problems to address before the laser guide star is in regular operation at the largest telescopes to feed adaptive optics in the infrared as well as in the visible, whatever the gain in the variance of the phase error of the wavefronts. In particular in Europe several institutes are working about several of these problems, either from the point of view of theoretical st...
متن کاملImproving sodium laser guide star brightness by polarization switching.
Optical pumping with circularly polarized light has been used to enhance the brightness of sodium laser guide star. But the benefit is reduced substantially due to the precession of sodium atoms in geomagnetic field. Switching the laser between left and right circular polarization at the Larmor frequency is proposed to improve the return. With ESO's laser guide star system at Paranal as example...

In this paper we describe the operational strategy and performance of the Keck Observatory laser guidestar adaptive optics system, and showcase some early science verification images and results. Being the first laser guidestar system on an 8–10 m class telescope, the Keck laser guidestar adaptive optics system serves as a testbed for observing techniques and control algorithms. We highlight th...
